The Games

According to Resolution No. 376 of the Government of Mongolia in 2019, the "International Youth GreenGames" will be organized under the auspices of the President of Mongolia and the Concept of the Games is defined as follows.

One. Background

During the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 and in which participated Heads of States and Governments, the "Sustainable Development - 2030" program was initiated and by the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly was approved for the implementation from 1st January 2016 in order to “…meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is a document with 17 goals to achieve equitably and sustained development covering socio-economic and environmental issues, 169 targets to implement the goals, and 244 criteria for assessing goals and targets. It is recommended for each member country and every nation to develop the national program to promote the goals of Sustainable Development.

The United Nations highlighted the importance of participation of member countries, nations, international non-governmental organizations, business entities and individuals in successful implementation of the SDG and called them to participate.

Organizations of all sectors, scientists, researchers, and decision-makers in the world have been increasingly involved in the participation on implementation of SDG. In the field of sector of physical culture and sports, UNESCO organized the 6th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials responsible for Physical education and Sport (MINEPS VI) in 2017 in Kazan, Russia, and adopted “Kazan Action plan” to ensure the correlation of physical culture and sports of countries in implementation of the Sustainable development goals.

Sports issues are not specifically defined in the sustainable development goals as a separate goal but the sports and physical activity are issues that are closely linked to society, economy and environment specified in all 17 goals of Sustainable Development, and sector professionals, international professional governmental and non-governmental organizations point out that "sport is an important enabler for the sustainable development goals", emphasized to use the sport in successful implementation of sustainable development goals, and to promote the sports.

Valuing the sports role and participation in the implementation of the sustainable development goals, the participation of sports organizations and famous athletes is high in giving understanding to children and youth through the sport. In other words, it can be determined by “Sport-Peace, Development”, “Sports and Women”, “National sport and games” programs initiated and implementing by the UN, Anti-doping activities to develop the fair sport competition, "Sport for Peace" Movement initiated by a Prince of Monaco, International Centre for Martial Arts for Youth Development and Cooperation (ICM) initiated by Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, former Secretary General of the United Nations.

In Mongolia, the Parliament adopted the Resolution number 19 of 2016 by and approved the "Sustainable Development Concept of Mongolia 2030" and has started works to implement. But the terms of physical culture and sports are not included in this concept and there is no participation in the sports sector, the significance of physical culture and sport activities are not valued due to lack of knowledge and understanding.

Therefore, this project of International Youth Green Games is initiated and developed in order to advertise the sport significance to the people and to give an understanding of sustainable development goals through sports.

In compliance with Sustainable Development goals of UNESCO, “Quality physical education” implemented in Mongolia for the purpose of promoting public health education, maintaining health and social participation, and a subject of physical culture, one of the fewer lessons taught in secondary schools, will be the ground of the works to reduce the risks related to overweight, non-infectious diseases occurring among the population because of movement lack.

A well-planned and well-organized sports project is significant to give an understanding of a positive contribution to the country’s socio-economic development, tourism sector, citizens’ education, culture, and health, as determined by international experts of the social sector.
